Eat 22% Fewer Calories with This Simple Trick

Forget the fad diets and quit the calorie counting this year. Want to learn a super-simple tip for shredding pounds? Serve meals on small plates. Yes, it’s really that easy. Smaller plates mean smaller servings. And in this age of super-size this and all-you-can-eat that, keeping food portions in check is more important than ever. According to the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, the champions of smallplatemovement.org, people tend to serve themselves in proportion to the plate they are given. Through studies, the group found that reducing plate size resulted in approximately 22% fewer calories served, as the smaller plate made the serving they received seem more filling. Ready to banish those big plates and join the movement for better health? Here are a few tips to get you started… Switch your 12-inch plate to a 10-inch plate. Save those larger plates for special occasions and holidays. Your 10-inch plates will suffice nicely for everyday suppers. Keep them on a shelf that’s easy to get to until you get used to using them. Corelle® dinnerware makes it easy—many of their dinnerware sets, such as the CORELLE® SQUARE™ PURE WHITE 16-PC DINNERWARE SET, include 10.25-inch dinner plates. Make smart choices. You should still be mindful about the foods you choose to eat. Just because a piece of cake is served on a small plate doesn’t mean it has fewer calories. Opt for lean proteins—chicken, turkey, fish—and lots of fresh vegetables and wholesome grains. A dish pattern like the one on the CORELLE® BOUTIQUE™ BRUSHED 16-PC. DINNERWARE SET, GREEN makes it easy to remember that fresh food is the best food. Don’t include more than two items on a plate. Everyone likes variety, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Instead of making several individual side dishes, opt for recipes that combine veggies and grains or fruit and greens. Serve alongside a lean protein choice that’s dressed up with fresh herbs. Make your plate as colorful as possible. As they say, you eat with your eyes. And because your serving sizes are smaller and your variety more limited, it’s important to build a plate that tells your brain you are about to dig into something good and satiating. Plus, colorful foods tend to be the most healthful ones. Broccoli, blueberries, tomatoes, kale and winter squash are all brightly hued superfoods that will get you super slim in no time. Colorful food looks great when served on the blank canvas of a snow-white plate. Present dinner like the pros do on a CORELLE® LIVINGWARE™ WINTER FROST WHITE 10.25″ PLATE. Don’t go back for seconds (or thirds). Don’t let your new good habit of eating on a smaller plate be for naught by going back for more. Remember, this is all about portion control. Wait 20 minutes after you’re done eating—this is how long it takes your brain to register that you are satiated—to determine if you need more. If you are truly hungry after that time has passed, opt for more veggies. Eat slower by using chopsticks. Studies have shown that you may consume fewer calories over the course of a meal when you eat slowly. For those who aren’t used to using chopsticks, this is a great way to slow down how quickly you consume your dinner. Other tips: Take smaller bites, chew slower and use a smaller fork or spoon. Simple changes can create big results. If you’re looking for a simple way to save on calories this month, tuck away those big plates and try the Small Plate Movement on for size. It may be just the thing you need to meet your healthy resolutions in a huge way.

Qatar Airways may launch world's longest flight

A planned direct flight between Doha, Qatar, and Auckland, New Zealand, would be the world's longest. (CNN)A whopping 18½-hour journey between Doha, Qatar, and Auckland, New Zealand, is poised to become the world's longest direct flight if Qatar Airways follows through with plans for the new route. Qatar CEO Akbar Al Baker revealed plans for the ultra-long haul in an interview with Bloomberg Business at last week's Bahrain Air Show. Boeing 777-LR aircraft would be used to make the trip, Bloomberg Business reported. The aircraft can carry 259 passengers. No word yet on when the airline might start the service. Currently, the world's longest flight is operated by Qantas between Dallas-Fort Worth and Sydney, according to statistics portal Statista.com. At 16 hours and 55 minutes (8,577 miles/13,804 km), the Qantas flight's duration falls short of Qatar's proposed Doha-Auckland route (9,034 miles/14,539 km) by more than an hour-and-a-half. Setting records for flight distance or duration is a moving target. Emirates Airline is set to eclipse current frontrunner Qantas in the spring, when it launches a route from Dubai to Panama City, Panama, that would last 17 hours and 35 minutes. And Singapore Airlines, which held the record for the longest nonstop flight until 2013, has considered taking the title back with possible resumption of its nearly 19-hour flights between New York and Singapore.

China economic growth slowest in 25 years

China's economy grew by 6.9% in 2015, compared with 7.3% a year earlier, marking its slowest growth in a quarter of a century. China's growth, seen as a driver of the global economy, is a major concern for investors around the world. Beijing had set an official growth target of "about 7%" for the world's second-largest economy. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has said weaker growth would be acceptable as long as enough new jobs were created. But some observers say its growth is actually much weaker than official data suggests, though Beijing denies numbers are being inflated. Analysts said any growth below 6.8% would likely fuel calls for further economic stimulus. Economic growth in the final quarter of 2015 edged down to 6.8%, according to the country's national bureau of statistics. Asia Business correspondent Karishma Vaswani on what the figures tell us China editor Carrie Gracie - Is slower growth China's 'new normal'? Can you trust the figures? http://www.bbc.com/news/business-35349576

Taiwan set to elect first female leader

Hong Kong (CNN)Voters in the only Chinese democracy are expected to elect Taiwan's first female leader when they go to the polls Saturday for presidential and parliamentary elections. Polls suggest a landslide win for Tsai Ing-wen, the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), after eight years under the pro-China Kuomintang, or Nationalist, party. The DPP has traditionally leaned in favor of independence -- a highly charged issue with China viewing Taiwan as a breakaway province that could be taken back by force if necessary. But that's not the only factor at stake in what is a landmark election for the young democracy, where people take their right to vote extremely seriously. Stella Han, who is among the roughly one million Taiwanese living in China, says she will fly back from her current home in Shanghai for election day. She plans to vote for the DPP. "I hope that Taiwan won't rely on China too much. It needs to find a way out," she says. Who are the key players? Tsai, 59, is viewed as a pragmatic leader who is likely to largely maintain the closer ties with China forged under current President Ma Ying-jeou. Her main opponent is Eric Chu of the ruling KMT and she's also up against James Soong from the People First Party. But the real drama may come in the parliamentary vote. A record 556 candidates are in the race for 113 seats. The DPP is tipped to do well as are smaller opposition parties. The ruling KMT is in danger of losing control of the Legislature for the first time. The island elected its first president in 1996 after more than four decades of martial law and one-party rule. Taiwan's free-wheeling democracy is in sharp contrast to China's one-party state and a cast of colorful candidates are contesting seats: an ex convict, an alleged spy and the front man of Asia's biggest death metal band.

Ebola resurfaces in Sierra Leone hours after WHO declares outbreak over

(CNN)Sierra Leone has reported a death from the Ebola virus -- a major setback hours after global experts said the outbreak is over in West Africa. The patient got sick at a town bordering Guinea, said Sidi Tunis, a spokesman at an Ebola response center in Sierra Leone. Health officials are tracing anyone who may have had contact with the deceased. The new case was confirmed Friday, hours after the World Health Organization gave the region an all-clear. It made the proclamation after Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea halted the chain of transmission simultaneously for the first time The clearance was notable because it meant the three nations hardest hit by the Ebola outbreak had reported zero cases for at least 42 days. Caution urged Despite the clearance, health experts urged caution and vigilance, saying there may be some flare-ups. And like Liberia, the virus has also resurfaced in Sierra Leone. Liberia was first declared free of Ebola transmission in May, but the virus returned twice after that, with the latest case in November. Before this week, Sierra Leone was declared free of Ebola transmission in November while Guinea got its clearance last month. Forty-two days is twice the incubation period of the virus, a WHO requirement for a nation to be declared free of transmission. Thousands killed The Ebola epidemic killed about 11,300 people and infected 28,600 others, mostly in the three nations. It has devastated families, communities and economic systems since it emerged in late 2013 . Evidence shows the virus can remain in the semen of male survivors for as long as a year. In rare instances, it can be transmitted to sexual partners.

Party-perfect makeup with Jonas Wramell It’s party season! And to make sure you’re looking your most festive, we caught up with Oriflame Artistic Director Jonas Wramell to talk trends, party-proof application and morning-after makeup. What should we consider when planning our makeup for a party? Well it depends what type of party you’re going to. A day party will require different makeup to a night out of course. My rule of thumb is this: more light less makeup, less light more makeup. How can we get the best results when getting ready for a night out? Apply your makeup in stages. Start by putting-on foundation and concealer, and then set your base with a dusting of powder over your forehead, chin, nose and cheeks. Allow time for your makeup to absorb and stabilise before applying other products – this is a good time to fix your hair or paint your nails. Now apply the rest of your makeup in this order: brows, eyes and lips. Any party makeup don’ts? Don’t overdo it! Great makeup is about balance. Either focus on strong brows and eye makeup, or a statement lip, but not both at once. You can reference the latest trends when it comes to colour, but don’t follow trends so closely that you look like a fashion-victim. Instead, try to find your most beautiful features and accentuate them, trust me this will look better than any beauty trend. What lipstick colours should we wear this party season? The “trendiest” colour right now is a dark burgundy, but if you don’t suit it, opt for a classic red lip – you can never go wrong. How can we make the graphic-eye trend more wearable? Apply eyeliner as you normally would. Then, using a thin brush dipped in a dark eye shadow, layer over your eyeliner to create a smoky makeup look. This will be more wearable than “graphic” eyes, but still on-trend. How can we wear glitter without getting it all-over our faces? First apply a creamy eye shadow (my favourite product) and dust a light layer of glitter over it. The cream base will help it stick. Glitter is generally quite hard to pull-off, so try a shimmer-based product instead. How can we avoid greasy-looking skin when dancing the night away? You should never compromise on dancing and having fun, just to look good. If you worry about shine, pack some blotting papers into your handbag. Or, if you have problem skin, use a small powder brush (or a big eye shadow brush) to dust loose powder onto oil-prone areas. Don’t apply powder to your whole face though as this will clog pores and trigger oiliness. How can we fake a fresh face after a late night? First and foremost, always remove your makeup before you go to bed – your skin needs to breath during the night. Second rule: hydrate. Drink lots of water and moisturise to combat dull skin and a puffy face. If you’ve got bags under your eyes, try a hydrating gel. And, take a less-is-more approach to your makeup the day after a big party.
